Brazilian Wax: Tips for First-Timers

If you have booked your first Brazilian wax, then you will know that it differs from the traditional bikini wax in that all hair is removed (front, back and in between). The idea of a Brazilian wax may still seem a little daunting; however, you have already overcome the biggest hurdle in deciding to get one. Here are some Brazilian bikini waxing tips to make the experience and after-effects as comfortable as possible.

Be Clean

If you can, shower before your appointment to eliminate bacteria. We recommend using Outback OrganicsSkin Wash which is a foaming, soap-free skin wash with antiseptic tea tree, cooling peppermint oil and stimulating mountain pepper extract. Upon arrival at the salon, you will most likely also be given a wipe to ‘freshen up’. It’s advisable that you use this before receiving your wax – it will make you feel more confident going in and the beautician appreciates the effort! Keep an Outback OrganicsIntimate Wipe on hand just to make sure you’re good to go.

Skincare

In the lead up to your wax make sure your skin is prepped properly to prevent ingrown hairs from appearing. We suggest you use the Outback Organics Hand and Body Lotion and Face and Body Scrub to loosen dead skin cells and help the hair follicle to be released. On the day of your wax, avoid moisturising or using heavy products and simply clean your skin with Skin Wash.

Afterwards, it is important to soothe the skin to further prevent ingrown hairs. We’ve bundled our best sellers into theBig Wonders for Down Under kit. This makes it easier for you to moisturise and exfoliate on the go whilst providing you with all the after-care you need.

Time It Well

Whilst most beauticians are happy to wax you if you’re on your period, your skin is more sensitive at this time. It is therefore advisable to avoid booking your Brazilian wax on or immediately around this time. Another handy tip worth noting is that your pain threshold is at its highest between 3 and 5 pm!

Grow Your Hair

Hair is considered to be a perfect waxing length at ¼ inch. That’s approximately the length of a grain of rice. If your hair is any shorter than this, then it is almost impossible for the wax to grip your hair and you may be turned away from your appointment. Beauticians are happy to trim longer hair to ¼ inch before your wax, or you can do this at home with an electric razor. A Brazilian bikini wax is recommended every 3-4 weeks because, on average, this is the length of time required to grow your hair to the ideal length.

Aftercare

Your skin is extremely sensitive immediately after a bikini wax, so wear loose clothing to prevent irritation and ingrown hairs. It is also advisable to avoid exercise and hot baths for at least 48 hours. This will also help to minimise pimples. To help soothe sore skin we recommend the Outback OrganicsBush Balm, which contains Aloe Vera and can be purchased as part of our handy Big Wonders for Down Under kit.

Manage the Pain

How much a Brazilian-wax hurts simply varies from person to person. Some parts will also hurt more than others. The best thing you can do is relax, but if you are really worried about the pain you can take an Aspirin or Ibuprofen beforehand. Of course, remember that the pain is over quickly and the effects last for 1-2 weeks hair-free before you start to see regrowth.

Handy re-cap:

  • Let the hair grow!
  • Wear loose clothing.
  • If you’re worried about being clean bring your own wipes. (Your beautician will most likely have some – but to put your mind at ease).
  • Take a couple of pain killers 2 hours before your appt.
  • Ensure your beautician is using a peelable wax (not strip).
  • Don’t do anything that will make you sweat for 24-48 hours after.
  • Avoid hot baths/showers after.

The more frequently you wax, the less painful it will become. By using the latest Outback Organics technologies, your wax will be as quick and effective as possible. Your hair will also become finer and sparser with every wax. Regular waxes throughout the year will also help your body grow accustomed to the pain. Once you have had your first Brazilian wax, the brief discomfort is worth the weeks of not worrying about hair growth.
