Our Guide to Back Waxing

Male grooming is an area in the beauty industry that is rapidly growing. By offering a back-waxing service you are opening yourselves up to a whole new client base.

A back wax will give roughly 2-3 weeks of smoothness, and the hair will likely be ready to wax again after 4-6 weeks. As with all waxing services, over time the hair will become sparser and finer showing inhibited regrowth. Back waxes are one of the few services that we recommend combining both peelable and strip waxes for the best result.

Before beginning the wax, the skin needs to be prepared to avoid hair breakage and to reduce the risk of infection. Use Outback Organics Gel Cleanser to cleanse the skin gently without using alcohol. Massage the cleanser in to the skin thoroughly in all directions using your gloved hands to provide both cleansing and softening effects. The cleanser does not need to be wiped away after application. Second preparation stage is Outback Organics Botanical Oil, which contains argan oil, rosehip and green tea for anti-oxidant and hydrating properties. Mist the skin lightly, and work the oil in to the skin using your gloved hands, both with the hair direction and against it. Once the oil is worked in to the skin, use a folded tissue to wipe any excess oil away. During the removal process, check the direction of hair growth, as this will affect the placement and direction of the wax patches as you apply and remove. You cannot overwipe at this stage as we want to remove all surface oil, leaving only that which has been worked in to the hair folilcle. This step helps to reduce hair breakage, giving the smoothest and most long-lasting wax with as few ingrown hairs as possible.

To actually begin waxing, you will see in the video that we begin in the centre of the back with peelable wax, applying with the direction of hair growth and removing against it. Once that lower centre back is cleared, we move on to the lower sides using strip wax (we use Amber Cartridge Wax for speed and convenience) going from the hip up to the lower edge of the shoulder blade, where the hair growth changes direction. Press down with the strip to remove any visible areas of wax left behind. With all waxing, maintaining the skin stretch is essential to ensure a comfortable wax for the client, as well as supporting the skin to further reduce the risk of skin lifts, and right from the very beginning of the video above, you can see that Claire is moving her hand as the patches of wax are applied and removed to ensure that the skin is stretched and supported through the entire process of each patch. Once the first side has been cleared, move to the other side of the body and repeat the lower sides.

We then return to peelable wax for the area over the scapula, applying patches on alternate sides and using the time in between each application to allow the previous patch to dry. Outback Organics Gold Peelable is a fast drying wax, and these application and removals are mostly shown in real time. We then move the client to a seated position to complete the wax around the base of the neck and upper shoulders. The hair directions on the upper back area tend to vary more from one client to another, so do pay close attention to avoid hair breakage and therefore ingrown hairs.

Once the wax is complete, you'll want to apply the Post-Wax care products. Begin with a post-wax application of Gel Cleanser, and use a cotton pad with a spritz or two of Botanical Oil to remove any lingering wax residue.  We recommend the Outback Organics Post Wax Spray for back waxing, as this skin is very prone to the post wax pimples and infection that we particularly want to avoid. It contains Lemon Myrtle (a powerful natural antiseptic) and Aloe and Bush Mint for soothing and cooling. You can spray the product on and leave it, or you can work it in with your gloved hands. Post-Wax Spray is also available in a retail size for clients to use for a few days following treatment, particualrly if they are prone to post-waxing breakouts.  We then finish with a final application of Outback Organics Aloe Gel, which has fantastic calming and soothing effects to take any residual heat out of the skin and calm any redness.
